Palpitations are sensations where you feel your heart beating irregularly, too fast, too hard, or fluttering unexpectedly - often prompting worry, but not always serious.

UNDERSTANDING PALPITATIONS: WHAT YOUR HEARTBEAT MIGHT BE TELLING YOU
Overview
Palpitations are a common symptom and can feel like a racing heartbeat, missed beats, flutters, or thuds in the chest. They may last for seconds or minutes and can occur at rest or during activity. While many palpitations are harmless, they can sometimes be a sign of an underlying heart rhythm problem such as atrial fibrillation or ectopic beats.
Common triggers include stress, caffeine, dehydration, or lack of sleep. They are also commonly experienced during perimenopause and menopause, often triggered by hormonal changes affecting heart rhythm and sensitivity to stress. If they happen frequently or are accompanied by symptoms like dizziness or chest pain, it’s important to seek medical advice. Dr Sayan Sen specialises in diagnosing and managing the causes of palpitations, using a calm, expert approach that puts your wellbeing first.
INVESTIGATING AND TREATING PALPITATIONS
When you visit Dr Sayan Sen, he’ll take time to understand your symptoms in detail and discuss possible triggers. Initial investigations may include an ECG or a Holter monitor to track your heart rhythm over 24-48 hours.
An echocardiogram may be recommended to assess your heart’s structure and function. If palpitations are linked to exertion, an exercise treadmill test (ETT) or stress echocardiogram (ESE) may be used. For those experiencing palpitations alongside dizziness or blackouts, a tilt test can help assess your blood pressure response. Dr Sen will clearly explain your results and, if needed, provide a personalised treatment plan – whether that’s reassurance, medication, or further specialist care.
